Ngaio House

In a site with a steep fall and high wind exposure, this new two-storey house captures most of the natural and suburban valley views of beautiful Ngaio, Wellington.

An open ground floor plan with double circulation, 180o long views to the North-East and an attractive double-height stair space delicately connecting the public with the private levels shape the character of the house.

The ground floor area includes an open kitchen space, dining area, an informal living, and a formal TV living. A study nook under the stairs brings a tranquil tucked-away little space for home working. The upper level offers a main bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite, a studio room, a guest room, and a family bathroom. An extra study nook enhances the stair landing and fuses the double height experience.

A pure form cut out to the North-East façade with two enclosed balconies is wrapped at ground level by a timber deck creating a flexible double circulation on the exterior. A pergola protects the West facing elevation from the summer afternoon sun. Carefully designed openings frame the Ngaio views and contribute to the contemporary simple architecture lines of the four facades.
